"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is
the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many
enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that
leads to life and only a few find it (Mathew 7: 13-14)."
This verse above was a big point brought across when Keith
Becker was talking to CHS students about his brother Todd. He
explained thoroughly what this verse meant, and how it related to
his brother's story; how Todd took the wrong road after his
freshman year in high school, thinking it was the easy way, and it
was the fun way, but not knowing it would lead to a tragic
happening.
Todd Becker was senior in high school, one of the "popular" kids,
very athletic, played football, a star athlete in track, and worked
a job at a supermarket. Three weeks before track season started
Todd, and some of his buddies got MIP's. His track coach found out
and pulled them into the office, explaining that he couldn't do
anything at the moment because it was the off season, but if he
heard a rumor, or whatnot about the four gentlemen drinking at
anytime during track season, they would not be on the team. Two
weeks passed by, Todd and his friends didn't drink, but the third
weekend was a different story. On the Sunday of the third week, the
last weekend before track started, the boys decided to drink. They
had no idea what it was leading up to.
When the
late night rolled around, and Todd wanted to go home he was too
drunk to drive. He told his friends he couldn't drive; he needed
someone to take him home. One of his friends volunteered to drive
him home, along with another passenger. As they were taking the
trip home they took the wrong turn leading them to a road that they
weren't too familiar with, lots of curves, and turns. As they went
along on these curves a car accident occurred, leaving two of them
injured and one in a body bag. Todd was the one that happened to
lay in the bag, leaving many astonished, and the driver in jail for
homicide.
High school is a time to experiment with a lot of different things.
Sometimes not knowing what effects it may have on you, but still
doing it, is just because your peers are doing it or because you
just felt like it. Todd Becker is just like one of the other
million high school kids who go out and drink and have some fun,
except he was one of the unfortunate ones who happened to get in
that one car accident that ended his life and made a dramatic
change.
Todd Becker happened to take the wrong road by experimenting
in the small things, and then getting into big drinking, parties,
and drugs. A majority of high school students can't say they
haven't been there or aren't there at the moment. You want to have
fun in high school, go out, and be with your friends. I'm sure the
assembly made some of you think and to others didn't make a
difference, and you just sat back and joked about it. But you have
to think; how many times have you been in a car with a drunk
driver, or been the drunk driver? Ask yourself that, and then
realize that you're just the lucky one who hasn't ran off the road,
steered the wrong way, hit something or someone, or ended your life
or someone else's. Yes, the assembly may not have made a difference
to many, or changed anyone's opinion on anything, but until it
happens to you or someone close to you, you won't be able to feel
anything for it. It takes something tragic to make someone realize
that things you do are wrong and can be very dangerous.
