Enjoying Stone Soup

by Danelle Burd & Kristin Moore

A few weeks ago Miss Moore and Mrs. Burd’s kindergarten classes read the story Stone Soup. Stone Soup is a story of a young man who is traveling through a town and stops to ask for food. When he asks, no one is willing to give him anything to eat. So, he pulls a stone out of his pocket says he can make soup from a stone. Everyone laughs, yet is intrigued to see if he can accomplish such a task. He tricks the villagers into providing ingredients for the soup. When it is finished cooking, the all enjoy a hearty meal.

On Wednesday, December 9, the two kindergarten classes met in Miss Moore’s room with their ingredients they were assigned to bring. Children were asked to bring potatoes, celery, carrots, onion, and teachers provided hamburger and broth. While listening to two versions of the story, children were randomly called back to put the ingredients into the soup. At the end they were able to watch Miss Moore put the secret ingredient (the stone) into the soup, which made it fit for a king.

On Thursday parents and children were able to meet at Kenwood Elementary to enjoy a lunch of “Stone Soup,” biscuits, juice and cookies. It was a delicious meal and a VERY fun learning experience!!!
