Nebraska Writing Project

by Willie Uhing

As a culminating activity and assessment in Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, students composed their own personal poems based on their place in Nebraska.  Due to the breadth and depth of the prompt, various avenues of style, structure, and form as-well-as theme were submitted.  The Chadron High School English Department then voted on the four poems (maximum number of submissions) to be sent to Lincoln for state competition.  Noteworthy Nebraska poets Twyla Hansen and Matt Mason will be the final poem critics before winners are announced.  Winners will travel to various Nebraska poetry readings, including a reading on May 7th at the state capitol in conjunction with Hansen and Mason.

The four Chadron participants are Kailas Ledbetter, Jake Bradley, Mackenzie Welch, and Jordyn Stevens. (See poems below)

Ode to Poison Ivy by Kailas Ledbetter

Sandhills by Jacob Bradley

My Nebraska by Mackenzie Welch

Then To Now by Jordyn Stevens
