NOVEMBER 2009 NEWSLETTER

We will be giving the ECOMPASS on November 18th at Chadron High.  The ECOMPASS is a shorter computerized version of the ACT and is a college entrance exam especially for community and Junior colleges.  If you want your student to take the ECOMPASS have them contact the counseling office.  There is no cost to take the test. 

Parents all these scholarships and more are on chadronschools.org website.  Logon and go to the guidance tab then go to Prephq and type in your username and password.  If you can’t remember your username and password just type in the word “guest” for the username and password then you can get on the web and look at all these scholarships.  Please Please utilize this great tool.  Look at the scholarship then check to see if the scholarship has a number.  The numbered scholarships can be picked up in our office or you can check shared files to see if the paperwork can be printed out.  Also, the websites are given for some scholarships and you can get on the sites and read their criteria. 

ACT TESTING- The ACT will be given on Saturday, December 12th from 8:00 to 12:00 at the Chadron High School.  Registration deadline before paying a late fee is Friday November 6th.

Raikes Scholarship UNL- #3 in the guidance office

The Raikes School of Computer Science and Management is at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and is designed for high ability students interested in an integrated honors education in Computer Science, Business or Engineering. If you are selected, the Raikes School pays the cost of your room and board! Additional information is available at http://raikes.unl.edu. Deadline: 11/15/09 

US Navy ROTC: #6 in the guidance office

Navy ROTC scholarships are valued at up to $180,000 each (depending on the school selected). The options available are either Navy or Nurse Corps. Please pick up the information if this sounds intriguing! Deadline: 12/1/09 

Horizon West Scholarship Inc. #12 in the guidance office

Horizon West, Inc offers a scholarship to a student who is interested in becoming a Farm Diesel Technician. The recipient will receive up to $10,000 for tuition, tools and books. In addition, they will receive paid on-the-job training during their winter and summer breaks. Please stop by the Guidance Office if you want more information on how these opportunities work (you need to agree to work for Horizon West for 3 years upon graduation)!!! Deadline: 12/15/09 
 

Nebraska Aviation Trades: #5 in the guidance office

The applicant must write an essay on "How Agricultural Aviation Helps Farmers & Consumers" and must also be recommended by a member of the Aviation Trades Association. Please pick up #5 if you'd like more information on this opportunity. 
 

NMC Sponsorship/Caterpillar Scholarships: #17 in the guidance office

NMC Diesel Technology Sponsorship and Caterpillar Scholarship Program – There are two separate programs for which you can apply: the NMC Student Sponsorship Program and the Caterpillar Foundation Scholarship. The NMC Student Sponsorship Program provides funds to cover tuition and book fees along with tools and a tool box. This sponsorship support is worth an estimated $14,000 to the selected students. Student must agree to work for NMC for a minimum of two years upon completion of their associate degree. For the Caterpillar Scholarships, there is no obligation required to receive the funds – students need only complete the scholarship form. Deadline: 1/30/2010 

Christian Connector Inc.: #15 in the guidance office

Christian Connector Inc. provides FREE Christian college information as well as a $2,500 Christian college scholarship drawing. Students can simply log onto www.christianconnector.com to request information and automatically be entered in the $2,500 scholarship drawing. Deadline: 5/31/10 

Senior girls interested in majoring in English contact the guidance office. 

NEBRASKA STATE COLLEGE SYSTEM:

Which includes Chadron State-Wayne State-Peru State 

NSCS ADVANTAGE PROGRAM: This program guarantees that first-time freshman who receives federal Pell Grants will pay no tuition while attending Chadron, Peru, or Wayne State College.  A participant must be a Nebraska resident, a federal Pell Grant recipient, a new first-time freshman and enrolled in at least 12 on-campus credit hours (with a maximum of 16 on-campus credits).  More information can be found at www.nscs.edu. Yellow Ribbon Program: Chadron, Peru and Wayne State College provide tuition and fees assistance to eligible military veterans.  This program is a partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.  More information can be found at www.nscs.edu. Click on the Yellow Ribbon icon. 

NSCS Scholarships: Scholarship applications and more information about the NSCS Scholarships or college-specific scholarships can be found at www.nscs.edu under the scholarship tab.  Students selected for the scholarships listed below will also be invited to the Second Annual Nebraska College System Scholarship Luncheon held in Lincoln, March 26, 2010.  Governor Dave Heineman and NSCS Chancellor Stan Carpenter will speak at the event.

  1. Board of Trustees Scholarship- This full-tuition scholarship is worth nearly $15,000 over four years.  To be eligible, students must score a 25 or above on the ACT or a 1700 or above on the SAT.  A complete listing of requirements can be found atwww.nscs.edu under the scholarship tab.  Application deadline: January 15, 2010 #27 in the counseling office.

 

  1. Governor’s Opportunity Award- #25 in the counseling office. This half-tuition award is worth nearly $7500 over four years.  To be eligible, a student must score between a 21 and 24 on the ACT or 1500-1650 on the SAT.  A complete listing of requirements can be found at www.nscs.edu under the scholarship tab.  Application deadline: December 1, 2009.

 

  1. Davis-Chambers Scholarship- This scholarship recognizes academically promising students who often find that the financial requirements of postsecondary education are a major obstacle for attending college.  The scholarship provides substantial financial assistance based on the student’s needs.  Find out more information at www.nscs.edu under the scholarship tab.  Application deadlines:  Freshman-December 1, 2009. #24 in the counseling office.

 
 

JUNIORS ARE REMINDED TO TAKE THE ACT AT LEAST BY SPRING. 
Financial Aid Night is January 12th, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at the High School.  At this gathering parents can ask questions about the FAFSA and learn about student loans and have other questions answered that you might have.  There will also be times set to make appointments to have your FAFSA done for you in February. 
Parents of seniors remember to register for your FAFSA pin #numbers at www.pin.ed.gov.  Your pin numbers are your electronic signature for your FAFSA when you complete them after the first of the year, once your 2009 -1040 Income tax forms are completed. Both parents need a pin number and their student. 
Univ of Nebraska at Kearney
#26 in the Counseling Office 
Omaha World Herald/Kearney Hub and Kearney Honors Program. Applicants for the Omaha Herald/Kearney Hub Scholarship (recipients receive full tuition plus payment for room, meals, fees and books) must have their completed application forms postmarked by December 1, 2009. Students who qualify for the Omaha World Herald/Kearney Hub Scholarship hold a 28 ACT minimum, a ranking in the top 10% of their senior class and a Regents Scholarship from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Applicants for the Honors Program and other scholarship considerations must have their completed application forms postmarked by February 1, 2010. 
Constance Rife Scholarship 
Constance K. Rife Scholarship is for senior girls who participate in golf. This scholarship was provided to our five seniors via US Mail. If you need additional information, please e-mail mark@mhbgolf.com or call Mark at 402-305-5370. The application will be available on-line later this fall at www.mhbgolf.com. (I couldn't find the deadline, so you'll need to check it out on the website) 
 
Great Plains Communication
#30 in the Guidance Office 
Great Plains Communication offers multiple scholarships. Please stop in to look at specifics: E.C. Hunt Scholarship – for incoming and current Dana College students; Trade and Technical Scholarship – for high school seniors who plan to attend a trade or technical school in Nebraska; Long Distance Scholarship – for students who plan to enroll in an agricultural related program; Cable Television Scholarship – for students planning on attending either Chadron State or McCook Community College; FRED Scholarship Fund – for individuals with a rural background who have demonstrated a commitment to rural life; FRS College Scholarship Program – for seniors who express an interest in returning to a rural area to pursue their careers after graduating. Medical Transcription Scholarship – for students who are enrolled in a medical transcription program. Deadlines vary. 
 
Hastings College
#28 in the Guidance Office 
Hastings College offers some HUGE scholarships: Walter Scott (full tuition), Trustee ($16,500/year); President ($14,500/year); Dean ($12,500/year), Ambassador ($11,500/year); Ringland ($10,500/year) and ProRege ($8,500/year). To quality for these prestigious scholarships, high school seniors must meet ALL of the following by January 8, 2010: 1) Be a graduating high school senior 2) Apply and complete admissions file 3) Rank in the top 20% of their senior class or have a 3.75 GPA or higher 4) Score a 26 composite score or higher on the ACT exam or at least 1170 combined critical reading and math score on the SAT exam 5) Complete a Walter Scott Application 6) Submit an activities resume. Deadline: 1/8/10. 
Maynard Jensen Memorial
#20 in the counseling office 
2010 Maynard Jensen American Legion Memorial Scholarship – Applicants must be sons or daughters, grandchildren or great-grandchildren, adopted or stepchildren of members of Department of Nebraska, The American Legion or POW, MIA, KIA or any veteran that was a current American Legion member at time of death. Selection of recipients will be made on the basis of academic achievement, extracurricular activities, financial need, and the completion of all information requested in the application. Nebraska Educational Office Professionals Association
#19 in the counseling office 
Nebraska Educational Office Professionals Association offers a $1,000 scholarship. The qualifying student must have completed a major course of study in the area of Business Education (two or more classes in the following: computer classes, keyboarding, typing, shorthand, accounting, office practices and procedures, and/or bookkeeping). Deadline: 1/15/10 
US Bank

US Bank will award forty $1,000 scholarships to college-bound seniors. High school seniors planning to enroll next fall at an eligible four-year college or university participating in the US Bank No Fee Education Loan Program are eligible to apply.
