Math and Trees!
Math MadnessWe love March! This is a month where the Fourth Grade teachers ask parents to speak to the students about how they use math in their daily lives. The students learned about paying taxes the first day. The pictures on this blog show a mother teaching the students how to find the diameter of a tree without cutting the tree down;)
Bankers do Math!
Money "Math Madness!"On March 25th, our guests for "Math Madness" were Tony Denke and Caitlin Spencer from First National Bank North Platte. They came to talk to us about what services a bank has to offer and how to balance our money.

Range Management Specialist!
"Math Madness" Continues! Our guest for "Math Madness" on March 19th was Clint Phillips, a range management specialist for the U.S. Forest Service. His job is to manage resources for sustainability, or being able to last for a long time. Part of his job involves figuring out how many cattle a rancher can put on leased land and how long they can stay there.
"Math Madness, Round 4!"
"Math Madness, Round 4!" On March 20th, our guest for "Math Madness" was Ted Tewahade. His presentation was prepared for the most awesome class ever! Mr. Tewahade is an IT analyst for Chadron State College. His daughter, Blaine, says he is a "computer guy." Part of his job involves purchasing new computers for the college. He determines how many new computers are needed and then uses math to make sure he is getting the best deal for the money.
"Math Madness" Times Two!
We had two presentations for "Math Madness" on March 23rd. Our first speaker was Marc Fisher, a maintenance teacher at Pine Ridge Job Corps. He brought two very important tools with him, a four feet level and a tape measure. He explained why it is important to measure carefully, and with Parker's help, showed us how being off 1/4th of an inch can make a difference of almost 3 inches on an 8 foot span. He also showed us how to figure how many studs (boards) it would take to build a 20 foot wall. Studs are 16 inches apart.
Service Project
Students at CIS practiced their cooperation early this week. Mr. Bach's Guidance Classes chose to help clean up the play area behind the school. During snow removal, much of the gravel was pulled out into the playground along with the snow. All their efforts resulted in a play area free of gravel. The rocks were a hazard when playing football or soccer in the area. We were also concerned that mowing the lawn would be a danger to everyone this Spring.
